Trent Alexander-Arnold marked his return from injury by scoring the winner in Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Leicester City in the Premier League, moving the Reds to within three points of winning the title after a 13th victory from their last 16 head-to-heads against the Foxes, who were relegated as a result.

Arsenal’s win against Ipswich meant Liverpool would need to wait to officially be crowned the champions no matter the result, but the Reds still came out showing intent as Mohamed Salah hit both posts in the third minute.

Stephy Mavididi was causing problems for Conor Bradley going the other way, setting up Wilfred Ndidi for a shot that also hit the woodwork, although there was an immediate reminder of Salah’s threat as he worked Mads Hermansen.

The hosts continued to compete well, with Dominik Szoboszlai resorting to hitting a speculative free-kick that was convincingly gathered by Hermansen.

Luke Thomas then reacted to block Salah’s latest attempt and Ibrahima Konate’s header was routinely saved. Conor Coady’s blushes were spared after he allowed Luis Diaz to get behind and find Cody Gakpo, as Hermansen got down to tip the Dutchman’s header wide.

The busy Foxes stopper then prevented a Gakpo attempt from finding the top corner, before Ndidi cleared a more convincing Konaté header and Salah missed from the back post.

Hermansen was in the thick of the action again after the restart, parrying Szoboszlai’s strike from range before Coady rushed back to clear ahead of Gakpo, who then had a shot blocked by Ricardo Pereira.

The Reds’ chances were still piling up without being converted as Díaz fired over, before Hemansen rushed out to deny Kostas Tsimikas, Salah curled an effort wide and Diogo Jota headed past the post from Liverpool’s 20th attempt, while Coady had the ball in the Liverpool net in the 67th minute, but the hosts’ joy was short-lived as the goal was ruled out due to Patson Daka fouling Alisson Becker.

The visitors went back on the front foot immediately, and after Salah and Jota both hit the woodwork, Alexander-Arnold smashed in the winner before tearing off his shirt and celebrating in front of the Liverpool fans, who chanted “we’re gonna win the league” after seeing their side record back-to-back wins.

Despite Leicester’s valiant display, their relegation was confirmed while extending their unwanted PL record of nine consecutive home games without a goal, while Liverpool are one victory away from securing the title.
