Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli said Brentford captain Christian Norgaard "could have broken my leg" with the tackle he launched on the Arsenal striker in the first half of the Premier League clash - and the midfielder should have been sent off for a "nasty" challenge.

Norgaard was heavily critisized for bringing down Martinelli with a lunging tackle in the first half, much to the disgust of the home fans at the Emirates Stadium.

The incident occurred in the 28th minute at Emirates Stadium, when Norgaard brought down Martinelli to stop the Gunners from launching a counter-attack.

Referee Simon Hooper gave the Brentford captain a yellow card, with VAR choosing not to upgrade the decision.

"I didn't see that again but in the moment, if my foot was on the floor, he could break my leg," Martinelli told Sky Sports after the 1-1 draw.

"He (Norgaard) said he didn't mean it. I believe him but still he could have broke my leg. For me it was red. I need to see it again to be sure. But for me it was nasty."

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta protested furiously on the touchline after the incident and later said, "I think my reaction tells everything", while Brentford boss Thomas Frank added: "That's his opinion. I thought it was a strong yellow."

The match ended 1-1 after Yoane Wissa cancelled out Thomas Partey opening goal.
