Known for their slow starts this season having scored just once before half time in the PL, the Black Cats put those struggles firmly behind them, quickly finding their stride against struggling Wolves.
Wilson Isidor sent an emphatic near-post finish into the net in the opening stages only to have the effort chalked off, but Sunderland quickly got the reward their bright start deserved, taking a 16th-minute lead.
Full-backs Nordi Mukiele and Trai Hume combined brilliantly, exchanging a slick one-two before Mukiele slotted home his first goal for the club.
The Black Cats maintained their grip on the game and should've made it two before the half-hour mark. A Mukiele long throw was flicked on by Dan Ballard and dropped in front of Hume, but his desperate diving header shaved the outside of the post.
Wolves’ attempts to gain a foothold in the match were met with a resolute Sunderland defence that rebuffed what few attempts they had.
Vítor Pereira’s side improved after the break, but the Portuguese coach cut a frustrated figure on the touchline as his team spurned what few opportunities they mustered.
Their lack of conviction in the final third was telling, with late substitute Tolu Arokodare squandering a rare chance in the closing stages, epitomising a poor second half that produced very little quality in front of either goal.
That suited Sunderland, who were able to wrap up victory late on when defender Ladislav Krejci’s attempted interception deflected the ball into his own net.
And although not the most complete 90-minute performance from Régis Le Bris’ side, the Black Cats faithful will be delighted with their home form that has seen them pick up 10 points in their first four top-flight home games of a campaign for the first time since 1968/69.
Wolves, meanwhile, remain at the foot of the table as the only side in the PL yet to pick up a win this term.
