Why Eberechi Eze could be the perfect replacement for Son Heung-min at Tottenham

It's all change at Crystal Palace with John Textor selling his stake in the club to ensure that the Eagles can fly high in the Europa League in 2025/26.

UEFA rules meant that there was a chance the Premier League outfit and last season's FA Cup winners might not have been able to take their place in the European competition because of Textor's interest in Ligue 1 side, Lyon.

That no longer seems to be an issue but supporters may not be too enamoured by the other rumours coming out of Selhurst Park.

FA Cup final scorer, Eberechi Eze, has emerged as a serious target for London rivals, Tottenham Hotspur, after it became clear that Thomas Frank's ideal new striker signing, Bryan Mbeumo, would prefer a move to Manchester United.

With it believed that the Red Devils have also upped their offer to in excess of £60m, talks would appear to have accelerated, meaning the Lilywhites are going to have to look elsewhere in order to bring a new front man to the club ahead of the new campaign.

Losing Eze would be a huge blow for Crystal Palace

Just 12 months after seeing Michael Olise move on to Bayern Munich, losing their other major star in Eze could be a blow from which the Eagles might not recover, and it would be completely understandable if Steve Parish and Oliver Glasner put a prohibitive transfer fee on his head.

Indeed, given that the 26-year-old's contract doesn't run out until June 2027, holding any potential purchasers to the £68m release clause the player is understood to have wouldn't be a surprise.

Tottenham's interest certainly makes sense at this point too.

There is still uncertainty and confusion surrounding Son Heung-Min's next steps, and it's entirely possible that the club captain leaves this summer.

Primarily a left-winger, Eze would therefore be a positional like-for-like swap, even if both players can also cover other attacking positions as and when required.

What would Tottenham be getting for their money?

In the 167 games that the English international has played for Palace, he's notched a respectable 40 goals and provided 29 assists (Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup only).

To give some perspective, that's only six fewer goals than the Eagles' top scorer in that time, centre forward Jean-Philippe Mateta (46 goals).

Son's output during the same time frame (2020/21 to 2024/25) is significantly higher - 78 goals, 47 assists - though he had played some 27 more matches during that time in a team - particularly when Harry Kane was in situ - that he flourished in.

Although Eze's 22.2% shot conversion rate doesn't read well, when one considers that Son's is just a paltry 12.3%, it puts a different spin on things. Neither are what would be termed natural goal scorers in any event, even if they do weigh in with their fair share.

There is a marked difference, however, in shooting accuracy. Son's 66.7% is far, far better than Eze's 47.5%, and the north London club's fan base will soon let the latter know about it if he is to become both the short-term and long-term replacement for a player the Spurs faithful have taken to their hearts.

Both players are adept at bringing colleagues into play, and not only is the range of passing extensive, but also accurate. Of the 833 passes that Son made in the 24/25 Premier League, 700 found their target for an 84% pass completion.

Eze's 81.5% is just shy of that figure, however, he did make 914 passes with 745 finding their man.

In terms of defensive attributes, Eze has made 75 interceptions compared to Son's 56 and won possession back on 770 occasions, with Son managing to do so 613 times.

The Palace man has also attempted 173 tackles across the past fours seasons, winning 93 of them for a success rate ranging between 33.3% and 66.7%.

Son has won 64 of his 120 tackles - significantly lower than his contemporary - with his range also beginning at 33.3% and going as high as 61.9%. One could argue, of course, that the South Korean has been playing in a team where he hasn't generally been required to get his 'hands dirty' as much as Eze has for Palace.

Can Daniel Levy afford not to go after Eze?

Looking at whether the transfer of Eze is one that's needed, taking away from the numbers for just a moment, the Palace man is one of that rare breed of players that gets supporters excited.

Son did that once upon a time but his advancing years - he'll be 33 by the start of next season - means he isn't quite the threat that he once was.

To that end, if the south London outfit are willing to do business, then surely it would be remiss of Daniel Levy not to go all in on a player that has long been coveted by many of Palace's Premier League rivals as well as clubs on the continent.
