Jonas Adjetey’s breakthrough season at FC Basel has been nothing short of remarkable, marking a significant turning point in his professional career.

The 21-year-old helped Basel to their first league title in seven years and also to the cup to complete the domestic double.

These two trophies were the first of Adjetey’s professional career as he has had to remain patient. After starting just 11 league games in the previous campaign, the Ghanaian centre-back dramatically increased his involvement, featuring in a whopping 32 Swiss Super League matches during the 2024/25 season.

In an exclusive interview with Flashscore, Adjetey shared that he was at the right place at the right time and seized his opportunity.

“For me nothing really changed but I just tried to do my best and then try to fit in the first team. But, when I started, I was training with the first team and was playing with the second team. Then there was an injury to a teammate. I came in and then I took my chance and then right from there, I built on it.”

His defensive contributions have been impressive, with strong tackling, interceptions, and aerial ability, all of which have made him a reliable figure at the heart of Basel’s defence.

Over the season, Adjetey played more than 2,500 minutes in the league alone, showcasing his durability and the trust placed in him by the coaching staff.

Basel’s 2024/25 campaign was a triumphant one, as the club clinched their 21st Swiss Super League title, finishing 10 points clear of their closest challengers, Servette FC

For the young Ghanaian, winning the league was a deeply meaningful milestone, the first major trophy of his career.

“For me, it's meant so much for me because this is my first trophy. We jubilated after the Lugano game. Almost all the players came to the dressing room. We celebrated with the fans. During that week we had like two celebrations,” Adjetey said.

With the league title secured, FC Basel have earned a spot in the play-off round of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League, a crucial stage that offers a gateway to the prestigious group phase.

For Adjetey, the prospect of competing on Europe’s biggest stage is a dream come true.

“For me, it's a great honor to play in the Champions League. We will play a play-off. I just pray we get the win and then we can fit in (group phase). But for me to play in the Champions League is a very great honor. I always watch Champions League.”

Adjetey’s breakthrough season has not only brought him his first major trophy but also established him as one of the most promising young defenders in Swiss football. With interest already growing from top European clubs, his journey at Basel may just be the beginning of a much bigger story.
