It was a big weekend for Fenerbahce in the Turkish Super Lig as they trimmed the lead of table-toppers Galatasaray down to six points. Meanwhile, Besiktas appointed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their new manager.

Fenerbahce were in action on Sunday evening, as they visited bottom-of-the-table Adana Demirspor. For around 60 minutes of the match, Jose Mourinho's men were frustrated, as they struggled to break down a resilient defence, much to the Portuguese coach's own frustrations.

However, an unlucky straight red card for Adana player Yusuf Barasi totally killed off Adana's chances, with Fenerbahce taking advantage.

They scored four goals in the last 21 minutes to, in the end, claim a comfortable win. Youssef En-Nesyri, Edin Dzeko and Cenk Tosun all got on the scoresheet.

In recent weeks, Mourinho has switched to a two-man strike-force, playing En-Nesyri and Dzeko up front together. And it certainly seems to have worked, with the former finally finding his feet in Turkey and proving why Fenerbahce paid a Super Lig record fee for him.

The Moroccan has 10 goals in the league this season, scoring eight in his last six games. His energy and enthusiasm up front have been a huge plus for Fenerbahce, as he constantly makes himself a nuisance to defenders.

As a result, Dzeko also seems to be thriving alongside him.

The 38-year-old certainly isn't the player he used to be, but he is still a fine finisher and is very intelligent. With En-Nesyri doing a lot of the dirty work alongside him, Dzeko can stick to what he does best - putting the ball in the back of the net. He also has 10 league goals.

Dusan Tadic didn't start the game, but when he came on in the 66th minute, he set up two goals, extending his lead at the top of the assist standings with nine to his name.

It seems that Mourinho has settled on this new system, and the club's transfer business in recent weeks showcases that he now wants to bolster their defence.

Diego Carlos and Milan Skriniar are on the verge of signing for Fenerbahce and will certainly add a lot of steel and quality to their backline.

The win was utterly vital for Fenerbahce with Galatasaray faltering two days earlier.

On Friday evening, Galatasaray had the chance to extend their lead at the summit of the Super Lig to 11 points - at least temporarily. They had an away game against Hatayspor, and it was largely expected that they would have little issue swatting away a side that look set for relegation.

But it didn't go that way at all.

Galatasaray put in a truly awful performance. They were lacklustre and lethargic in the first half, perhaps playing with too much complacency. And they were duly punished as they went a goal down.

They stepped their game up in the second half, with Victor Osimhen bagging from the penalty spot in the 56th minute.

They peppered the opposition goal for 45 minutes and racked up an xG of 3.52. However, they were guilty of missing several of the most clear-cut opportunities you are ever likely to see, with Baris Alper Yilmaz having a nightmarish game in front of goal.

In the end, the game finished 1-1, with Galatasaray dropping two points and their lead at the top being trimmed down to just six points. It was an extremely disappointing result for Okan Buruk.

Ultimately, they are still in a dominant position. But they have given Fenerbahce a foothold back in the title race - and totally unnecessarily too.

They will need to get busy in the transfer market to restore some momentum and positive vibes. Fenerbahce are strengthening and Galatasaray certainly need to add to their defence as well as bring in more squad players so they are able to compete across all fronts throughout the rest of the season.

They wanted to sign Skriniar before Fenerbahce hijacked the deal, which will come as a blow. But they undoubtedly need to bolster that area of the pitch. They just cannot stop leaking ridiculous and sloppy goals at the moment.

They are reportedly close to signing Eyupspor's star attacking player Ahmed Kutucu, which would be a really sensible and logical acquisition.

The Turk has had a brilliant season for the Super Lig debutants, and he will add much-needed depth and quality to Galatasaray's squad.

Ole is at the wheel

It has been a pretty torrid season for Besiktas. Sitting in sixth in the Super Lig and managerless since the start of December, they drew 0-0 at home against 10-man Samsunspor on the weekend, missing several chances and struggling in the final third.

However, since then, they have confirmed the appointment of a new head coach to try and turn their fortunes around: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

An interesting appointment, Solskjaer hasn't managed since being sacked as Manchester United manager back in 2021. He has also previously taken charge of Molde and Cardiff.

Personally, I am not the biggest fan of Ole as a manager at all. I don't think he's a very good coach or that great tactically. However, I can somewhat see the logic behind this.

When Ole became United manager, the club were in a bad place and he steadied the ship. A lot of that was due to his man management. Clearly, he is a likeable personality and players respect him.

In Turkey, due to the volatile nature of football clubs and their fans, it is of paramount importance that you are a good man manager. So Ole ticks that box.

The Besiktas job at the moment is an unbelievably difficult one, so there is no guarantee that he will work out there. The second things go slightly pear-shaped, the pressure will ramp up on him to an extreme level.

But if he can come in and bring a little bit of a feel-good factor to the club and let the players just express themselves on the pitch, there might be a positive upturn in results.

It is also another good acquisition for the league itself. After the arrivals of Mourinho and Osimhen, Ole is another big name who can bring more eyes to the Super Lig.
