Turkish Super Lig Weekly: Fenerbahce close gap on wasteful Galatasaray

It was a vital weekend for Fenerbahce as they were able to capitalise on some rare dropped points from Galatasaray and move within three points of their rivals heading into December.

It is a rarity that a gameweek comes and goes and Galatasaray haven't picked up three points. But when it does happen, the title challengers simply must capitalise, and that is exactly what Fenerbahce did on Monday night.

But first, to Sunday. Galatasaray legend Arda Turan received the warmest of welcomes as he brought his side Eyupspor side to Rams Park to visit the champions.

Eyupspor have been one of the teams of the season so far, flying high in fourth place in the table during their Super Lig debut. But they were facing their toughest task yet on the weekend.

And after 90 minutes of riding their luck and a masterclass from goalkeeper Berke Ozer, they managed to escape Istanbul with a 2-2 draw. Unlike their opponents, they took pretty much every chance they had and were intelligent in how they managed the game. Another impressive result in an impressive campaign for Eyupspor.

Galatasaray will be bitterly disappointed with the result, however. They racked up 28 attempts and an xG tally of 4.35, but were just so wasteful in front of goal. Victor Osimhen, Baris Alper Yilmaz, Roland Sallai and Kerem Demirbay were all guilty of missing clear-cut chances, with Berke making 12 saves.

On any other day, Galatasaray may have won that game comfortably with the opportunities they created. But there have been occasions this season where they have been erratic in the final third, and with Mauro Icardi injured, they no longer have an out-and-out poacher.

As exceptional as Osimhen is, he does a lot of good work too outside the box and with his hold-up play, while Icardi spends most of his time sniffing for chances in the penalty area. For matches like this, Icardi's instinctive finishing would have been valuable.

A positive for Galatasaray was the performance of Sallai though, who also scored his first goal for the club and was a constant nuisance on the left wing.

I'm not totally sure that this match is a huge cause for concern for Okan Buruk, but he will be hoping that they can be tidier and more ruthless in the future. 11 wins and two draws to start the season is nothing to complain about.

But it did allow Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce an opportunity to close in on Galatasaray. And that is exactly what they did.

Despite a scare at the end of the first half, Fener had more than enough to down a Gaziantep side led by yet another Galatasaray legend, Selcuk Inan, by three goals to one.

Twenty-four-year-old Oguz Aydin made just his second league start for the club after signing in the summer. Coming off a brace last week, he continued exactly where he left off, scoring inside three minutes and being a constant thorn in the side of Gaziantep defenders.

Defender Rodrigo Becao headed home in the second half to put his team 2-1 up before super sub Edin Dzeko volleyed home in exquisite fashion to seal the win late on.

The win moved them three points behind Galatasaray, although with an inferior head-to-head record after losing 3-1 to them earlier this season. However, they are now within touching distance, and their performances seem to be improving slowly as Mourinho integrates his ideas. Super Lig record signing Youssef En-Nesyri also looks to be settling and playing to a higher level.

The title race is now firmly on, and although Galatasaray remain favourites, Fenerbahce are firmly in contention.

Madness at Besiktas

It is fair to say a lot has happened since last week in regards to Besiktas. A horrid run of form culminating in a humiliating 3-1 'home' defeat in the Europa League to Maccabi Tel Aviv tipped the club over the edge.

Thirteen points off Galatasaray at the top of the table, Besiktas sacked manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst, while club President Hasan Arat was removed and replaced by Vice President Huseyin Yucel. But just today, he declared that a general election would be held in the next 30 days to officially find a new President, with Huseyin himself a candidate.

In addition, General Coordinator Samet Aybaba and former US goalkeeper Brad Friedel, who was an advisor to club management, announced their resignation.

Panic stations have firmly set in at Besiktas. Reports claim that former player and manager Sergen Yalcin - who won them their last league title in 2021 - was the number one target, but that currently doesn't look very likely.

In the meantime, as they hunt for a new coach, assistant manager Serdar Topraktepe stepped up to take charge as Besiktas visited Hatayspor on Monday, with the game ending 1-1 thanks to an equaliser from Ciro Immobile.

They were unfortunate not to win the game after missing some massive chances, but frankly, what is going on on the pitch is not the priority at the moment. They have more important matters off the pitch to deal with.

Highlight of the Week

The definition of a legend, Arda Turan was celebrated and given an amazing welcome by Galatasaray and their fans on Sunday. One of Turkey's best-ever players, Arda won league titles in Spain for Atletico Madrid and Barcelona, as well as for Galatasaray in 2008.

Istanbul Basaksehir striker Krzysztof Piatek has been on fire, currently in second in the Golden Boot standings with eight goals behind Immobile. And this weekend, the Pole was player of the week, scoring twice and providing an assist in his side's 4-1 win over Goztepe.

Teammate Deniz Turuc also makes the team according to Flashscore's player ratings system with a goal and two assists, while Berke Ozer and Oguz Aydin are unsurprisingly included.
