It was a manic week in Turkey as Fenerbahce and Besiktas both looked to get back on track after sacking their managers following disastrous European results. Meanwhile, Galatasaray continued their flawless start with another win.

Fenerbahce failed to qualify for the Champions League after a defeat to Benfica last week, and as a result, Jose Mourinho was put out of his misery and sacked. After a moody, dull, and failed stint in charge of the Istanbul giants, not even coming close to achieving his goal of winning the Super Lig, Fener decided enough was enough.

So assistant manager Zeki Murat Gole took charge of their game at newly-promoted Genclerbirligi on Sunday, and instantly, he brought a few more Turkish players into the team (Oguz Aydin and Irfan Can Kahveci), something Mourinho was criticised for not doing enough.

And it ended up being a comfortable 3-1 win for Fener, with Youssef En-Nesyri bagging a brace while new signing Nene helped create an own goal.

Archie Brown at left back was yet again excellent, setting up Fenerbahce's second and proving to be a constant menace up and down the wing.

It remains unclear who Fenerbahce's next manager will be, but they have certainly been busy in the transfer market. In the last few days, they have signed Kerem Akturkoglu, Marco Asensio and Ederson, as they attempt to close the gap to Galatasaray and go on a run in the Europa League.

Another team that sacked their manager after a disastrous result in Europe were Besiktas. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was given the boot after a humiliating 1-0 home loss to Lausanne-Sport, and his stint in Turkey was nothing to write home about either.

The club were quick to appoint a new manager, though, as they brought back former player and coach Sergen Yalcin - the last man to help Besiktas to a league title back in 2021.

So he took charge on the weekend, and he would have been made well aware of the scale of the task in front of him, as they slumped to a 2-0 loss at Alanyaspor.

The team is definitely not as bad as the results have showcased, and there does remain quality in it. However, the balance of the side is totally wrong, and there are too many lazy players with poor mentalities.

Sergen will need time to transform the team, but the good thing is he is a Besiktas man, and he understands the ins and outs of the club. If there is anyone who can shake things up, it is him.

Galatasaray remain perfect

While chaos was ensuing at their Istanbul neighbours, it was normal service for three-time defending champions Galatasaray, as they claimed a 3-1 win at home to Rizespor.

Davinson Sanchez and Victor Osimhen got on the scoresheet to put Gala ahead, but Rize got one back with around 20 minutes to go. It was the first goal Galatasaray conceded this season.

Some pressure was being put on them, but in the end, substitute Mauro Icardi tapped home in stoppage time to seal the three points.

It wasn't their best performance, and they were certainly sloppy and lacked some imagination in the final third. Against better teams, they would have been punished.

Regardless, they are now four wins from their first four games - the only outfit in Turkey with a 100% record. They have also scored 13 goals and conceded just one.

In addition, it was a busy Monday for Galatasaray, as they secured the signing of their new first-choice goalkeeper. They went with Trabzonspor's highly-rated number one Ugurcan Cakir, who has been one of the best in the league over the last few years.

Remarkably, they spent a reported €36 million on the player. But depending on who you believe, plus reported VAT, it could be closer to €30 million.

Regardless, it is a hefty sum, and if it is €36 million, it makes him the most expensive Turk of all time. It also means that Galatasaray have the three most expensive signings in Super Lig history (Victor Osimhen - €75 million, Ugurcan Cakir - €36 million and Wilfried Singo - €30 million) - all signed this summer!

Ilkay Gundogan from Manchester City is also set to join, which is a wise addition. He will bring experience and class in midfield, despite being 34 years old.

The window is open for another 10 days in Turkey, but as it stands, they have spent a whopping €148.27 million, which is the 14th most in Europe, according to Transfermarkt.

The next question is: Can they continue their dominance in Turkey with this squad, then translate it to the Champions League?
