A number of Danish coaches are calling for the Danish Superliga to be restructured and possibly go back to the structure that was in place before the new structure was launched ten years ago.

10 years ago one of the most significant decisions in the history of the Superliga was made, when it was decided that the classic structure, where all teams would meet each other three times, should be dropped, and instead, from the 2016/17 season, a new structure would be introduced where the league was divided into Championship- and Relegation playoffs.

The Superliga isn't unique in having a divided league structure. The top leagues in countries such as Scotland, Switzerland, Austria and the Czech Republic have a similar system while Belgium following heavy criticism have decided to back to the old structure.

The different structures have been heavily debated in Denmark especially since Silkeborg missed out on the Championship playoffs through goal difference in close competition with Brondby.

Brondby coach Frederik Brik also favors the old system:

"I'm not a big fan of it (the current system). I have to be honest. I think there's something wrong about the fact that we were in such close competition with Silkeborg, and suddenly we had the luxury of competing for something that's much more fun than Silkeborg does", says Birk to TV2 Sport.

Also Silkeborg coach Kent Nielsen would like to see the current system scrapped even through he does see the commercial advantages of the current system which according to the former Danish international intensifies the drama around the race for the title:

"In many areas I am a romantic. I always believe that you should focus on what is fair in sport. And that is to play tournaments like they used to be played. That is how I have always looked at it. This year we came in seventh, and last year we came in sixth, and my opinion has not changed."

Four rounds remain in the current league where FC Copenhagen top the table one point ahead of FC Midtjylland. AaB and Vejle are currently locked in the relegation zone.
