With two wins by the odd goal under their belt already, it looked to be another nervy afternoon for Ilves, as newly-promoted KTP had some of the better early chances.
But once the deadlock was broken by Roope Riski heading in Oiva Jukkola's cross in the 27th minute, the Tampere side took control, with Riski coming close to a second with a curling strike just before half-time.
The floodgates opened 10 minutes into the second half with three goals in a nine-minute spell.
First, Marius Soderback volleyed in neatly from a tight angle after his attempted cross was cleared back to him, before Lauri Ala-Myllymaki drew the goalkeeper and squared for Riski to add his second just two minutes later.
Then, Ala-Myllymaki turned from provider to scorer, when he was on hand to tuck away the rebound after Maksim Stjopin's effort was saved.
The cake was iced in the 72nd minute, when Teemu Hytonen was played through by Stjopin and finished coolly to make it 5-0.
The huge win keeps the Lynx top on goal difference, while KTP, who will be left wondering how they were beaten so comprehensively having had four big chances of their own, remain on one point.
Keeping tabs on Ilves are SJK, who picked up their third one-goal victory in as many matches by beating Mariehamn 2-1.
The visitors' defence was breached for the first time in the league this season, when a deep cross on the stroke of half-time was nodded in by Emmanuel Okereke.
But Stevie Grieve's side dealt with the setback and turned the match around in the second half, with two goals from Kasper Paananen.
For his first, 11 minutes after the break, he caught the bouncing ball sweetly at the edge of the area and hammered past the goalkeeper. Then, with time winding down, he found a pocket of space at the near post to turn a low cross into the back of the net.
Paananen has scored three of SJK's four goals this season, taking him joint-top of the Veikkausliiga scoring charts.
Inter Turku are two points back, but their start has been no less impressive, gaining a second win in a row after drawing with champions KuPS on the opening day.
This time, they inflicted a first loss of the season on VPS, winning 2-0 away in Vaasa with a goal in each half.
Jussi Niska picked out the bottom corner with a sweet strike from 20 yards with half an hour played, then Mamodou Sarr doubled the advantage 12 minutes after the break, running onto a well-timed through ball and unleashing a first-time shot.
KuPS, meanwhile, have also picked up consecutive wins since that draw in Turku, the latter of which was a 1-0 success at home to new boys Jaro.
A shock was on the cards late in the first half, when Jaro were awarded a penalty, but in-form Kerfala Cissoko was not able to convert the spot-kick.
Jaro were then denied a point at the home of the champions just six minutes from time, when Rasmus Tikkanen took aim from outside the area and saw his strike nestle in the bottom corner.
It's now back-to-back losses for Jaro, who remain in midtable courtesy of an opening round victory.
AC Oulu's poor start to the campaign continued, remaining without a point after a 2-1 loss at Haka, who gained their second win of the season.
Oulu looked on course for their first win when a Danny Barrow goal gave them the half-time lead, but strikes from Danila Bulgakov and Lucas Cini turned the match around for Haka, who sit fifth in the early standings.
The third round of matches concludes on Tuesday evening, when the other two sides yet to get off the mark - HJK and Gnistan - meet in Helsinki.
