It was initially claimed that the striker would not feature in the June international window so as to be rested after a long domestic season with Barcelona, before the 36-year-old made an announcement on social media last night.
Finland already knew they were set to face Poland without Lewandowski when the two teams meet for their Group G match in 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying tomorrow, yet many view the bombshell news as an extra boost to the Eagle Owls' chances.
Despite their underdog tags, Finland's display at home to the Netherlands in their 2-0 defeat on Saturday was seen as a disappointment. They will need something against Poland to maintain realistic ambitions of reaching a maiden World Cup finals.
However, manager Jacob Friis is not being drawn into the debate about whether the latest from Lewandowski will help his side.
"If I start speculating about whether the turbulence in Poland is good or bad for us, I'm wasting my energy unnecessarily. That doesn't prepare us any better for the match. We're focusing on ourselves and our own game, not anything else," said Friis at Monday's press conference.
Opponents Poland sit atop Group G, two points clear of Finland despite playing a game fewer. The Netherlands sit one point back, though the Finland match was their first of the qualification campaign.
With the Netherlands at home to Malta tomorrow, Finland will likely find themselves in third, off the pace, and with fewer matches to come should they lose to Poland. Friis' ambitions remain high.
"We want to win the group, but of course we have to be realistic. Of course we want to go to the World Cup, otherwise there would be no point in participating in the qualifiers.
"Against Poland we have to defend well, create chances and score goals. We have to get the game the way we want it to be."
