VfB Stuttgart extended their H2H winning run against Augsburg to six matches after Deniz Undav’s late goal earned them a 3-2 turnaround victory in the Bundesliga at MHPArena.

Augsburg got off to a dream start as they took the lead with only eight minutes on the clock. A ball over the top wasn’t dealt with, and Anton Kade broke into the area before seeing his shot saved by Alexander Nubel, with the rebound falling to Alexis Claude-Maurice, who also had his effort saved, but at the third time of asking, Fabian Rieder found the bottom right-hand corner to give the visitors a surprise lead.

However, their advantage would last just 10 minutes, as Keven Schlotterbeck brought Dan-Axel Zagadou down inside the area to allow Maximilian Mittelstädt to equalise from the penalty spot.

Augsburg started the weekend just a point above the relegation zone, but they were performing well and restored the lead with the half-hour mark approaching as Han Noah-Massengo won the ball back just outside the area before turning and slotting the ball past Finn Dahmen.

This time, their superiority on the scoreline would last 13 minutes as Undav met Bilal El Khannouss’ cross to send his header on target. Finn Dahmen looked to have made a good diving save, yet goal-line technology ruled that the ball had just crossed the line to ensure a level game at the break.

After a rip-roaring first half in which Stuttgart had to respond on two occasions, the home side would have expected to kick on after the break and really assert themselves in the contest. However, despite controlling the vast majority of the second half, the Reds weren’t at their best from an attacking perspective.

Amongst the lowest scorers at the top end of the Bundesliga, Sebastian Hoeneß’s men were frustrated by a Fuggerstädter side who had shipped the second most top-flight goals this season pre-match.

Having soaked up the home side’s pressure, Augsburg should have gone ahead for a third time when substitute Samuel Essende’s effort from inside the area cleared the crossbar.

And the striker was made to pay with nine minutes of normal time remaining when Undav’s effort from the edge of the area took a slight deflection to wrong-foot Dahmen and secure a dramatic victory that sees them climb into the top four. A dejected Augsburg remain 15th, just one place above the relegation zone.
