The Danish men's doubles pair of Johannes Ingildsen and August Holmgren failed to secure a lead for the hosts in the Davis Cup tie against Bulgaria. In a thrilling match, the Danes lost 6-4, 2-6, 6-7 to Alexander Donski and Petr Nesterov.
The Danes saved a total of four match points before losing the deciding tie-break 6-8. At Thursday's draw, August Holmgren was slated to play doubles with Carl Emil Overbeck, but—unsurprisingly—team captain Frederik Lochte Nielsen chose to replace Overbeck with the team's highest-ranked doubles player, Johannes Ingildsen.
The Danish duo got off to a perfect start, breaking the Bulgarians' serve to take a 2-1 lead. They were solid on their own serve and, without conceding any break points, closed out the set 6-4.
The Danes never really found their rhythm in the second set; they were broken early on and lost 2-6. The third set was evenly contested from the start, with few opportunities for a break.
It looked like the match was decided when the Bulgarians broke to lead 5-3, but the Danes—who hadn't come close to a break for some time—suddenly raised their level with their backs against the wall. They broke back to level the score at 5-5.
Trailing 5-6, the Danes faced two match points but saved both; by winning four consecutive points, they forced the match into a deciding tie-break.
In the tie-break, the Danes faced two more match points at 4-6, but the Bulgarians failed to convert those as well. However, it ended in disappointment for Denmark, as the Bulgarians won the next two points and, with them, the match.
This leaves the score at 2–1 in Bulgaria's favor heading into the final singles matches.
