In his first event since his sensational run at Wimbledon, where he reached the third round before crashing out against Alex de Minaur, August Holmgren claimed the title in the Challenger tournament in Granby by beating Liam Draxl 6-3, 6-3 in the final.

August Holmgren was just 6-14 for the season before going into the qualification tournament at Wimbledon and there wasn't much to suggest to signal that this would be the beginning of an impressive series of matches for the unsung Dane.

But Holmgren defeated Quentin Halys and Tomas Machac in the main draw in London to earn a third round tie with de Minaur, and the Dane kept up his inspiring form in Granby.

Holmgren, however had to battle hard to get past James Watt in the start of the tournament, but the Dane fought back and eventually also booked his ticket for the final by beating No. 1 seed Eliot Spizzirri in the semifinals.

In the final Holmgren looked untouchable in his service games while his forehand also turned out to be surprisingly consistent against Draxl who usually knows how to grind out results with his back to the wall.

But against Holmgren, Draxl’s fighting spirit did not have the impact otherwise experienced during the week as the Dane blew him off the court with Holmgren taking his 3rd Challenger title 6-3 6-3.

Holmgren will now move on to take part in the Challenger tournament in Bloomfield Hills this week.
