Holger Rune has dropped out of Top 1000 in the ATP following his early defeats in Tokyo and Shanghai.

Before the Masters 1000 tournament in Shanghai, Holger Rune was ranked within the world's top 200 players, but he has now lost the 200 points he earned by reaching the quarterfinals of that tournament last year. Furthermore, Rune has lost the 100 points he gained at last year's Stockholm Open.

As a result, the Dane has dropped out of the top 1000 on the ATP live rankings and is now currenctly ranked 1186 in the world. Rune only just returned to ATP action following a lengthy injury spell after rupturing his Achilles tendon last year at the Stockholm Open.

Ahead of his first match in Shanghai, Rune spoke to TV 2 Sport, explaining that his world ranking is not something currently weighing on his mind.

"It’s not really something I spend energy on. It takes just one good tournament to get back into the top 40 or thereabouts. That’s not where my focus lies right now. I don’t know if it will happen this year or next, but I’ll eventually get to where I deserve to be. It’s just a matter of keeping at it and believing in the process; it simply takes time," Rune said.

Rune will have the opportunity to earn ranking points in the near future, as he is currently signed up for tournaments in Basel, Stockholm, and Paris.
