Hussein Mohammed has promised to turn around Kenya's football fortunes after being elected the new President for Football Kenya Federation (FKF) on Saturday, December 7th.

Running under the banner of 'a fresh Start', Mohammed - who is also the CEO of Extreme Sports - garnered 42 votes in the first round of voting, 11 more than second-placed and immediate former FKF Vice-President Doris Petra in the hotly contested exercise at Kasarani Gymnasium in Nairobi.

In third place was former FKF CEO Barry Otieno, who managed 10 votes, followed by Kakamega Homeboyz chairman Cleophas Shimanyula who collected four votes while Gor Mahia legend Sammy 'Kempes' Owino got two and both Chris Amimo and Tom Alila one.

With the candidates failing to attain the required 50 per cent threshold for an outright win, the polls were set for a re-run pitting Mohammed, Petra and Otieno against one another. However, Petra was the first to step aside before Otieno followed suit setting the stage for Mohammed to be confirmed the new President, replacing Nick Mwendwa who had served the post for eight years.

A total of 48 county delegates were eligible to vote during the exercise but only 46 participated as the County elections in Nyamira and Homebay were not resolved.

A win for every player, fan and club

Mohammed, who will be deputised by former Harambee Stars and Inter Milan midfielder Macdonald Mariga, immediately promised to make Kenyan football great again.

Speaking after his win, Mohammed thanked the delegates for trusting the fresh start team and emphasised that the triumph belongs to players, fans, clubs, and supporters. He further pledged to rebuild Kenyan football by restoring pride, nurturing talent, and reigniting passion across the nation.

"Thank you to all the delegates who believed in the fresh start team and voted for change. This is not just our win - it’s a win for every player, fan, club, and supporter, who dreams of a better future for our game," said Mohammed.

"The work to rebuild Kenyan football begins now. Together, we will restore pride, nurture talent, and bring back the passion that unites us all. Thank you all for making this possible."

Speaking to Flashscore at the sidelines of the polls, Darajani Gogo official Ahmed Kalebi hailed the new changes in FKF saying they were long overdue.

"The whole nation is confident in the new leadership’s ability and capacity to steer football in Kenya towards a new viable and sustainable professional era including immediate commercial uplifting of the profession and semi-professional top-tier leagues plus a robust development of football at lower levels with nurturing of talents at the grassroots and youth teams," Kalebi told Flashscore.

Government to support the new office

Cabinet Secretary for Sports Kipchumba Murkomen congratulated Mohammed and Mariga for the win and promised to give them all the support needed to revive Kenyan football.

In a statement from Murkomen, obtained by Flashscore, he said: "I made a solemn promise during my vetting for this docket that I would unlock the election impasse in FKF and that we shall enforce the law of term limits. That promise has been fulfilled today (Saturday) following the election of new office bearers of FKF.

"Congratulations Hussein (Mohammed) and McDonald (Mariga) on your election as the President and Vice President of FKF respectively.  Congratulations to all other elected office bearers. I have not an iota of doubt that you're the best possible team that will inject new dynamism, energy and fresh ideas into the management of our football.

"I wish to assure you that the government will give you all the support you need to take our football to the next level."

Murkomen further warned other federations to respect the rule of the law and warned those not ready to watch out: "This should send a message to all federations who frustrate efforts to hold elections that their time is up. Good governance in our sports is not negotiable."

How Kenyans reacted to Mohammed's win

Kenyans across the country gave their support to the new office saying it was what Kenyan football needed for change. Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi wished Mohammed well as he embarked on the journey to transform the sport.

"Congratulations to Hussein Mohammed and Macdonald Mariga on their election as President and Vice-President of FKF. Wishing you great success as you embark on this exciting journey to transform and elevate Kenyan football. Here’s to a future of victories, stability, and lasting impact for the beautiful game in our country," said Mudavadi.

Homabay Governor Gladys Wanga said: "Congratulations to Hussein Mohammed and Macdonald Mariga on your election to lead Kenya’s football! Your work is well cut out and we wish you every success."

Former Harambee Stars striker Elijah Onsika remained optimistic that the new office will grow the sport. "Your leadership marks a new chapter for football in Kenya, and I am optimistic about the growth and success that lies ahead for our beautiful game under your stewardship to uplift Kenyan football and inspire the next generation of players and fans," Onsika told Flashscore.

Former Gor Mahia striker Innocent Mutiso said: "This is a win for football. We celebrate now and tomorrow the job begins. Hussein Mohammed and Mariga Mcdonald have their work cut out, we pray for grace and humility as they embark on fixing this mess we have been left with."

Former Gor Mahia coach Bob Oyugi believes Mohammed and Mariga will rebuild what was broken: fixing the leagues, investing in youth academies and fostering transparency in management.

"For years, the heartbeat of Kenyan football grew faint under the weight of greed and mismanagement. Dreams were shattered, talents wasted and hope extinguished by leaders who prioritized personal gain over the game and its people," Oyugi told Flashscore.

"Stadiums that were once filled with passionate fans became echoes of a glorious past. Players, the lifeblood of our sport, were abandoned, denied opportunities to shine on the national and international stage. Clubs struggled to survive as corruption drained the resources meant to fuel their growth.

"With the election of visionary leaders, the dream of a Fresh Start is alive again. It's our hope that they'll restore integrity, prioritize grassroots development and create a system where every player, fan and club can thrive.

"I believe these two will rebuild what was broken: fixing the leagues, investing in youth academies and fostering transparency in management. They will bring back the joy of football, ensuring that young boys and girls with a ball at their feet can dream again."

Mohammed's immediate task will be to oversee the 2024 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) to be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
