Atlético Madrid extended their winning run at the Metropolitano Stadium to 13 matches with a 3-0 win over relegation candidates RCD Mallorca in LaLiga.

The home side were very much in the ascendancy before the break against their struggling opponents. They created the first opportunity of note after 15 minutes when Alexander Sørloth’s low effort from just inside the area was well saved by Leo Román.

Having been denied moments earlier, there was no preventing Sørloth from giving the Rojiblancos the lead shortly after.

Johan Mojica’s headed clearance from inside the area was straight into the path of Marcos Llorente, whose powerful first-time volley was pushed away by Román to Sørloth. From close range, the Norwegian made no mistake as he poked the ball home, a goal which means Atlético have now scored first in all 11 of their home league matches this season.

Conceding early once again - 21 of the 31 league goals Mallorca have shipped this season have come before half time - the visitors struggled to make any impression from an attacking perspective in the first half.

Indeed, they failed to register a single shot on target as Diego Simeone’s men remained on top to take a deserved lead into the interval.

Although Mallorca had failed to score on their last two visits to the Metropolitano, they maintained some hope as they had never failed to blank in three consecutive away H2Hs.

That said, the travelling supporters were seeing nothing to encourage them as their outfit's insipid attacking display continued into the second half.

The hosts weren’t particularly setting the world alight either, but after Mateu Morey’s attempted clearance comically ricocheted off the face of David López to find the net from close range.

Thiago Almada rounded off the win inside the final five minutes of normal time with a powerful effort from inside the area.

The result sees Atleti consolidate their position inside the top four, while also ensuring their outside hopes of a third LaLiga title under Simeone remain alive.

Meanwhile, Mallorca are still very much in danger as they stay 16th and just two points above the relegation zone, having played a game more than every team below them.
