The Chicago Cubs signed Nico Hoerner to a six-year, $141 million deal on Friday, making it the fourth-largest contract in MLB history for a second baseman.

Hoerner, 28, went 0-for-4 at the plate with a run during Thursday's 10-4 loss to the Washington Nationals. The Oakland native had a solid year for the Cubs last season, batting a career-best .297 (100 games min.) with seven home runs and 61 RBI - the second most in a season for Hoerner - through 156 games.

Hoerner has also recorded at least 29 stolen bases in each of the last three seasons and has earned two Gold Glove Awards.

Now in his eighth MLB season, Hoerner has spent each of them with the Cubs since making his big league debut in 2019. Since 2021, Hoerner has never finished a season with a batting average below .270.

Chicago had also recently signed All-Star centerfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong to a six-year, $115 million extension earlier in the week, which kicks in next season and doesn't include any club options.

The Cubs will take on the Nationals for Game 2 of their three-game Opening Weekend series on Saturday, March 28th.
