New head coach Nicolej Krickau was again on the losing side against Gummersbach, having already suffered a sobering defeat against SC Magdeburg (32-39) on his debut a week earlier. Despite ten goals from superstar Mathias Gidsel, the champions dropped to seventh place for the time being after their fourth game of the season.

Gummersbach benefits from Füchse inefficiency
The chaotic opening to the season still seemed to affect the reigning champions in Gummersbach, where they struggled to make anything work in their favor in the opening minutes of the game.
It took a whole five minutes for Gidsel to score the first goal and the hosts opened up a lead of eight goals at times. There was no clear improvement in performance in the second half either.
Just three days earlier, the Foxes had provided a ray of hope in turbulent times with their opening win in the Champions League at French top-flight club HBC Nantes (40-34), but against Gummersbach they looked very disorganized on the court.
Siewert, who led the capital city club to its first league title in the previous season, had criticised the club's management in particular managing director Bob Hanning leading up to the game. Siewert wrote he feels "great human disappointment", on Instagram.
