The top four European national teams in the IIHF World Rankings are converging on Tampere, Finland for the 2025 Finnish Ice Hockey Games, the first tournament of the 2025/26 Euro Hockey Tour, as preparations for the 2026 Winter Olympics are taken up a notch.

Formerly known as the Karjala Tournament, hosts Finland took the title a year ago and will be keen to begin their defence with a victory in tomorrow's opening match against Switzerland at 17:30 CET.

Then at 19:00 CET, the previous two winners - Sweden and Czech Republic - face off in Angelholm, Sweden, the only match taking place away from the main venue of Tampere's Nokia Arena. The remaining fixtures will take place over the weekend.

After this tournament, the teams will meet again in December for the Swiss leg of the Euro Hockey Tour, but that will be the final set of matches for these four teams before the 2026 Winter Olympics at Milan-Cortina get underway in February.

Building good form ahead of the Olympics, where Czech Republic will face Switzerland and Finland meet Sweden in the group stage, is key for all four, though that will be a challenge as National Hockey League players are unavailable for this tournament.

Switzerland will hope that doesn't affect their positive 2025 which saw them reach the final of the IIHF World Championship, at which Sweden took the bronze medals and Finland and Czech Republic fell at the quarter-final stage.
