NHL roundup: Crosby and Malkin make NHL history as Penguins put up nine goals

Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin made NHL history during the Pittsburgh Penguins' blowout of the Florida Panthers in Saturday's slate of games around the NHL!

Penguins 9-4 Panthers

The Penguins unloaded for six goals in the third period as both Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin marked their names in the record books during the team's big win. 

Crosby officially surpassed Steve Yzerman to move into seventh on the all-time points list after recording his 1,756th point. As for Malkin, he became just the 23rd player in NHL history to record 1,400 points after finishing with his 14th career hat trick and one assist (four points).

Pittsburgh sits at 39-22-16 (94 points) and second in the Metro Division. Meanwhile, the Panthers are just counting down their remaining games as they've already been eliminated from playoff contention, falling to 37-36-3. 

Avalanche 2-0 Stars

The Avs became the first team to 50 wins on the season thanks to a pair of goals from Martin Necas (36) and Nathan MacKinnon (51). 

Goalie Scott Edgewood earned his third shutout of the season after recording 17 saves - also the 11th of his career. 

Dallas fell to 45-20-12 and still hold the second seed in the West. 

Wild 4-1 Senators

The Wild sit just behind the Stars in the West as the No. 3 seed as they improved to 43-21-12, as they scored four straight goals before Ottawa answered. 

Ryan Hartman scored his 21st and 22nd goals of the season, while goalie Jesper Wallstedt racked up 33 saves. 

Ottawa dropped to 39-27-10 (88) as the Eastern Conference Wild Card race will come down to the very end of the season.

Rangers 4-1 Red Wings

Gabe Perreault scored his first career hat trick and his eighth, ninth, and 10th goals of the season as the Rangers played spoiler for the Red Wings, who are in a four-way fight for the second Wild Card spot in the East. 

The Rangers have no worries as they've been eliminated from the playoffs, sitting on an Eastern Conference-worst 32-36-9 record.

Detroit now sits at 40-28-8. 

Lightning 3-1 Bruins

Casey Mittelstadt put the Bruins out in front during the second period with his 15th goal of the season. But Tampa's three goals in the third period were too much for Boston to rally against. 

Darren Raddysh set a Lightning record with his 21st goal of the season - the most by any defenceman in franchise history in a single season, passing both Dan Boyle and Victor Hedman.

Tampa (48-22-6) have already clinched a playoff spot, while the Bruins (43-26-8) sit comfortably in the top Eastern Conference Wild Card spot with 94 points.

Capitals 6-2 Sabres

The Washington Capitals joined the tight Eastern Conference Wild Card race as they now sit at 87 points in the standings, while four other teams are just ahead with 88. 

Even in the loss, the Buffalo Sabres still clinched a playoff birth for the first time in 14 years - finally ending the historic drought. 

Goalie Logan Thompson was the star of the game for the Caps after he put up 37 saves - tied for second-most this season. 

Hurricanes 4-3 Islanders

Despite a late goal from Anders Lee to cut the lead to one in the third period, the Islanders couldn't rally and have now lost four straight games as the Eastern Conference playoff race heats up. 

They're now 3-7 in their last 10, sitting with 89 points in the standings and third in the Metro Division. Meanwhile, the Canes (104 points) hold a comfortable lead in the Metro and are expected to win the division when the season ends. 

Seth Jarvis led the way with a pair of goals as he's now at 32 on the year - tying his season-high from last year. He needs just two more goals to set a personal best. 

Kings 7-6 Maple Leafs

The Kings rallied from behind three times in this crucial win as they try to maintain their spot in the Western Conference Wild Card. After going down 2-0 to start, they rallied to make it 2-2. After going down 3-2, Artemi Panarin tied it up 3-3 with his 27th goal of the season. 

Then they found themselves down 4-3 before scoring three straight to take a two-goal lead. Toronto rallied back to tie, sending it to overtime 6-6. That's when Los Angeles' Quinton Byfield scored his 20th on the season to earn the win. 

Los Angeles currently sit with 81 points in the standings, while Toronto has long been eliminated from playoff contention. 

Canadiens 4-3 Devils

Montreal took a 3-0 lead before the Devils rallied with thre straight goals of their own to send it to OT. After a scoreless overtime, it was a battle in the shootout as Cole Caufield, Ivan Demidov, and Oliver Kapanen each had to score to earn the win. 

The Habs have now won eight straight as they currently sit in third place in the Eastern Conference. As for the Devils, they're all but officially eliminated from the playoffs. It's just a matter of time. 

Jets 2-1 Blue Jackets

The Jets played spoiler for a Blue Jackets team in the heat of an Eastern Conference Wild Card race. Winnipeg's Kyle Connor scored both of the team's goals. He's now four goals away from making it back-to-back seasons with at least 40 goals. 

As for the Blue Jackets, who were held to just 16 shots on goal, they are now tied up with the Senators, Red Wings, and Philadelphia Flyers with 88 points. 

Mammoth 7-4 Canucks

Clayton Keller scored his third career hat trick in the Mammoth's win and brought his season total up to 25. If he can score five more goals before the season ends, Keller will have officially put up at least 30 goals in four straight seasons. 

Utah sit comfortably with 86 points in the top Western Conference Wild Card spot, while the Canucks, who possess a brutal NHL-worst 22-46-8 record, have now lost seven of their last eight games. 

If the Canucks don't win another game this season with six games left, it will officially be the fewest wins the team has put up in a single season since 1972-1973.
