Four points from their first two matches in October had given Varnamo a sliver of hope that the great escape may be possible, but this afternoon their relegation from the Allsvenskan was confirmed and in comprehensive style as they were beaten 6-2 at Djurgarden, but Degerfors ousting Oster meant a win would not have been enough.

Chasing European football for next season, a home match against the long-time strugglers was not an opportunity Djurgarden could pass up, and they took full advantage 16 minutes in when Mikael Anderson broke the deadlock.

Tokmac Nguen then but daylight between the sides before half-time, and if that did not crush Varnamo's spirits, then two goals in as many minutes from August Priske early in the second half surely did.

Ajdin Zeljkovic did however pull one back with just over a quarter of the match to go, and hopes of a miraculous comeback grew slightly when Matias Siltanen turned the ball into his own net for 4-2 with nine minutes to play.

But Jeppe Okkels restored the three-goal advantage soon after, before Patric Aslund completed the rout in the 88th minute for 6-2.

The result keeps Varnamo on 16 points, ending their four-year stay in the top flight, while Djurgarden move into fourth place, three points behind GAIS, though every team bar the bottom three have a game in hand over the Iron Stoves.

As it transpired, even a win would not have saved Varnamo, as they are now 10 points behind Degerfors with two matches to play, after they won 2-1 away at Oster in a real relegation six-pointer which saw them overtake the home side and move into the Relegation Playoff place.

The match came to life with just over a quarter of it to play when Arman Taranis put Degerfors ahead, but that lead lasted 12 minutes, as Alibek Aliev drew Oster level.

But in the 93rd minute - six minutes after coming on - Elias Barsoum grabbed all three points for Henok Goitom's men and lift Degerfors out of the automatic relegation zone.

It's a third win in five now for Degerfors, who have hit form at just the right time, while it's back-to-back losses now for Oster, though the gap between the two sides is just one point.
