There have been talks that Kaizer Chiefs could sign free agent goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner after he left Sekhukhune United in a surprising move last month.

Leaner was in the Bafana Bafana squad as recently as March and although he did not make the World Cup selection, had a fine season for Sekhukhune.

They have released him though and it would appear that Chiefs are leading the race for his signature.

That would more than likely signal an exit for one of their senior keepers, but the question is who?

We take a look at their options if Leaner joins.

Bruce Bvuma

Age: 31

Chiefs career appearances: 81 (79 starts)

Bvuma spent the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons as more or less the Chiefs number one, making 42 starts over that time. But he lost his place to Brandon Petersen and made only five starts all campaign, and it back to the role he has had for most of his 10 year stay at Chiefs, that of back-up. He has made 81 appearances in that decade long service, an average of eight per campaign. He would have hoped for much more. Should Leaner come in he could drop to number three in the pecking order.

Fiacre Ntwari

Age: 26

Chiefs career appearances: 8 (8 starts)

The Rwanda international did not make a single appearance in the league last season, sitting on the bench 11 times, with his only game the penalty shoot-out loss to Stellenbosch FC in the Carling Knockout, where he did at least keep a clean sheet.

It would seem likely he will leave in this window as he is not only taking up a foreigner spot at Chiefs but also lost his place in the national team due to his lack of game-time at club level.

Brandon Petersen

Age: 31

Chiefs career appearances: 74 (73 starts)

Petersen was the number one last season and had a stellar campaign in which he kept 15 clean sheets. It was form that took him to the cusp of World Cup selection for Bafana Bafana, though he ultimately missed out. He has certainly not always been the first choice in his five seasons with the club, averaging around 15 appearances per season. But at the age of 31 he could yet get better and it will be fascinating to see if he retains that number one jersey.

Takalani Mazhamba

Age: 19

Chiefs career appearances: 1 (1 start)

The teenager made his Chiefs debut in the 1-0 loss to Chippa United on the final day of the campaign, a clear signal that the club see a future for him within the team. He may not be ready yet, but he should remain in the squad as he develops over the next few seasons. Born in Venda but raised in Soweto, he has been at Chiefs since the age of 13.

Bontle Molefe

Age: 23

Chiefs career appearances: 0 (0 starts)

The youngster has not played a professional match for Chiefs and spent the second half of last season on loan at Motsepe Foundation Championship side Leicesterford City. He only made a single appearance there, but it was at least his debut in the Premier Soccer League. It ended in a 1-0 defeat to Black Leopards. Should Leaner come in it could spell the end of him, especially with Mazhamba in the wings.
