AS Monaco ended a six-game winless run in the UEFA Champions League by beating Bodo/Glimt 1-0 in the Arctic Circle.

With both teams yet to secure a Champions League victory this season before tonight, the opening exchanges were nervy to say the least.

Kasper Hogh recorded the first shot on target midway through the opening half, but his header was easily saved by Philipp Kohn.

Eventually, Monaco took control as Maghnes Akliouche and Folarin Balogun both had efforts just off target, and it was that duo that combined for the opening goal.

Akliouche fed Balogun in behind, and the USA international struck into the roof of the net from close range for his first-ever Champions League strike.

Nevertheless, Bodo responded well, with Hogh hitting the post shortly before the half-time whistle blew.

The hosts continued their momentum into the second half, as Patrick Berg’s free-kick was parried away by Kohn, before Jens Petter Hauge and Høgh drew more comfortable saves from the goalkeeper.

The latter seemed the most likely to equalise for Bodo, as another shot of his flew inches wide.

However, their hopes of finding a precious goal were scuppered by a sending off for substitute Jostein Gundersen, whose terrible challenge on fellow replacement Mika Biereth was upgraded from a yellow card to a red after a VAR review.

Bodo have now suffered back-to-back defeats as a result, and are still winless in this season’s Champions League competition. In contrast, Monaco picked up their first win of the league phase, bouncing back from a shock 1-0 loss to Paris FC in Ligue 1 last time out.
