Malmo beat Georgian champions Iberia 1999 in the opening round of qualification and had made light work of the first leg in Riga a week ago, running out 4-1 winners to make themselves overwhelming favourites to progress again.
And they made their place in the Third Qualifying Round all but certain midway through the first half, after intricate build up play between Taha Ali and Otto Rosengren set up Sead Haksabanovic.
His initial effort was saved by Marko Maric, but the rebound fell kindly for the forward, who make no mistake with the second attempt despite the best efforts of Maric and his defenders.
That was one of few clear chances in a first 45 minutes which had already seen Hugo Bolin fail to find the target when getting on the end of a cross, while RFS almost found an equaliser just before the break, but Janis Ikaunieks could not keep his strike down when allowed space inside the box.
With the tie long decided, MFF took their feet off the gas early in the second half, but Robin Olsen did well to stay alert and preserve the lead on the night - he was at full stretch to tip a long-range strike from Mor Talla onto the crossbar.
Things got worse for RFS a few minutes later when Ikaunieks' let his frustrations get the better of him and elbowed Ali straight in the chest, giving the referee no choice but to send him off.
The rash challenge did little to quash Ali's impact on the match - soon after he jinked his way past a couple of defenders to create a shooting opportunity for himself, but Maric was equal to the effort.
Late on, Haksabanovic went looking for his second, but this time the RFS defence managed to block his attempt on goal, but a 1-0 win on the night was more than enough for the Himmelsblatt.
Malmo will welcome Copenhagen to the Eleda Stadion for the first leg of their Third Qualifying Round clash either next Tuesday or Wednesday, before making the short trip to the Danish champions a week later.
The winner will then be a seeded team for the Play-off Round, the final round before the UCL League Phase.
