Round five of the 2025/26 Eredivisie season is all wrapped up after Sunday saw eight teams battle it out for three valuable points.

Excelsior Rotterdam - Sparta Rotterdam: 0-1

The third Rotterdam derby of the Eredivisie earned Sparta their third win in four games as Excelsior were beaten 1-0 in Kralingen.

Excelsior came off the back of their first win of the campaign and opened the game brightly with chances for Derensili Sanches Fernandes and Szymon Wlodarczyk in the first thirty minutes, but could not find a breakthrough.

Instead, the home side were put on the back foot when full-back Arthur Zagre was sent off with a second yellow card, which put all the initiative in the hands of Sparta.

A wasted chance from Mitchell van Bergen looked to have been Sparta's best shot at winning, were it not for Feyenoord loanee Ayoub Oufkir to force the difference in the 93rd minute with a clever run at the back post.

Sparta retained their spot in the top half of the Eredivisie and look to make it four wins from five when FC Twente come to visit Rotterdam next week. Excelsior visit fellow promoted side FC Volendam next Saturday.

FC Utrecht - FC Groningen: 0-1

High-flying FC Utrecht came crashing down to Earth at the hands of FC Groningen, who came to Utrecht and conquered Stadion Galgenwaard with a surprising 1-0 win against the UEFA Europa League side.

Greek stopper Vasilios Barkas was the sole reason FC Utrecht survived the first half, in which the former Celtic goalkeeper denied Groningen native Jorg Schreuders three times.

Following the break, the playing field was evened out until German defender Marco Rente put the visitors in front with a header after a back-post run.

After Tika de Jonge came close for Groningen, Sebastien Haller thought he'd put Utrecht alongside in injury time, but the Ivorian striker's goal was ruled out for offside, leaving FC Utrecht with zero points for the second time this Eredivisie season.

Utrecht have one more game to get hot before their first UEFA Europa League campaign since 2011, with an away game at Fortuna Sittard next on the calendar. FC Groningen, who have gotten hot with three wins from four games, move into seventh place with a home game against Telstar up next.

Heracles Almelo - AZ: 1-2

Heracles Almelo are yet to win a point this Eredivisie season after losing their fifth game in a row, this time at home against AZ: 1-2.

Portuguese centre-half Alexandre Penetra scored the opener nine minutes into the game, making optimal use of a rebound from a Sven Mijnans effort. Heracles equalised before the break, however, after captain Damon Mirani headed the ball in in the 29th minute.

AZ were looking to make their three-game winning streak a four-game streak and were rewarded for creating the biggest chances in the second half when Mexx Meerdink fired in the winner from Kees Smit's low cross.

Heracles were left winless yet again as their hunt for their first points of the season continued into round 6, when NAC Breda will be visited in the South. AZ are up for a bigger challenge with Feyenoord coming to visit Alkmaar on Sunday.

Telstar - Fortuna Sittard: 1-3

Fresh off their sensational 2-0 win over champions PSV, Telstar failed to treat the home fans to a first Eredivisie home win since April 1978 when Fortuna Sittard home a 3-1 win from Velsen-Zuid.

The home side got off to a false start when Paul Gladon, who was left all alone in the box, headed Fortuna in front in the second minute. Summer addition Jochem Ritmeester van de Kamp got the home side back in it before half-time following a swift combination on the left flank.

Telstar took the initiative in the second half and got close to taking the lead via Kay Tejan, but the forward missed three chances, leaving Fortuna Sittard alive and well.

Substitute Makan Aiko made the difference for Fortuna in a half where the visitors showed little to no threat whatsoever. Dimitrios Limnios powered forward and delivered an easy low cross for Aiko to put past Ronald Koeman Jr., who was beaten by Aiko a second time when the Frenchman ended the game with a counter goal in the 90th minute.

Fortuna Sittard won their second game in a row and head back home, where FC Utrecht will be their next opponent. Telstar make the trip up North to visit FC Groningen.
