The Flying Eagles will kick off their quest for glory when they face their European opponents at the global football showpiece.

Nigeria kick off their 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup campaign against Norway in their opening game, aiming to start the tournament with a win.

The Flying Eagles are making their 14th appearance at the competition, having qualified for Chile after finishing third at the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Africans’ best performances came in 1989 and 2005, when they finished as runners-up in the editions held in Saudi Arabia and the Netherlands, respectively.

Norway, led by Bjorn Johansen, are appearing in their fourth U20 World Cup. They earned their place in the finals through play-offs from the European U19 tournament.

Unlike Nigeria, the Norwegians have never progressed beyond the group stage in their previous editions. Both teams arrive in Chile with hopes of claiming their first U20 World Cup title.

However, before they can think about lifting the trophy, they must focus on getting their campaigns off to a strong start.

Where is the match?

Estadio Fiscal, Talca

Estadio Fiscal de Talca is a multi-purpose stadium in Talca, Chile, primarily used for football and serving as the home of Rangers.

Originally built in 1930 as “Estadio Municipal de Talca,” it became state-owned in 1937 and was renamed “Estadio Fiscal,” initially holding 17,000 spectators.

Renovated in 2011, its capacity was reduced to 8,200 all-seated. A major expansion between 2017 and 2019 increased seating to 16,070, making it the largest stadium in the Maule Region.

The venue also features an athletics track, added in the 1990s through a Chilean-Spanish government collaboration, supporting multiple sporting events beyond football.

What has been said ahead of the match?

Nigeria coach Aliyu Zubair remains optimistic about his team’s chances despite their underwhelming performances in pre-tournament friendlies.

“In the two matches we played here, the results were not even the most important thing. What mattered to us was identifying our deficiencies and working on them,” Zubair told the media.

Zubair Against Chile, we noticed a lot of areas to improve, and by the time we faced Australia, the corrections we made really worked. We saw clear improvement.

“At AFCON, our attack was not biting at all. But from these two matches, you can see the difference—our attack is sharper, and we are exploiting spaces better in the final third. It’s a big improvement, and with the little time left before the World Cup, we will continue to work on it.”
