Demi Schuurs, the only Dutch player active at the WTA Finals in Riyadh, started her tournament alongside partner Asia Muhammad with a loss to top seeds Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini: 6-3, 6-3.

Schuurs and Muhammad are the eighth seeds in the doubles tournament of the WTA Finals. Against the Italian top seeds, the Dutch-American duo could not bank any of their first three break points and dropped the following game in the first set, which paved the way for Errani and Paolini to clinch the set in 38 minutes.

The Italian duo opened their second set with another break as they were looking to solidify their status as tournament favourites. A fourth-game break from Schuurs and Muhammed was met with a furious reply in the final stages of the second set, which Errani and Paolini dominated with four consecutive games in a row.

Demi Schuurs, the older sister of football player and Torino defender Perr Schuurs, and Asia Muhammed were drawn to group A with Errani/Paolini, the duo of Elise Mertens and Veronica Kudermetova, and the Taiwanese-Latvian couple of Hsieh Su-Wei and Jelena Ostapenko.
