It marked Hughes' first-ever Olympic goal. They'll now advance to the semi-finals, where they'll be taking on Slovakia, who are coming off a dominant 6-2 win over Germany.
Nothing found the net in the first period, despite both teams combining for 21 shots on goal (SWE - 11, USA - 10). The US has now shut out every single team in the first period during these Olympics.
It wasn't until the second period that Team USA finally got on the board to make it 1-0, thanks to Dylan Larkin's first-ever Olympic goal, with assists from Jack Hughes (3) and Quinn Hughes (5).
Before the Olympics, Larkin said, "I've probably been thinking about making the U.S. Olympic hockey team my whole life."
Team USA would outshoot Sweden a whopping 20-9 in the second period, even missing out on their second power play opportunity after Sweden's Hampus Lindholm was called for tripping.
Sweden's Jesper Bratt, one of the team's top players, who was a healthy scratch against Latvia, didn't make his first appearance against the US until the third period. The Swedes would fail to capitalize on their first power play of the game after the American Vincent Trocheck was called on a minor for tripping, but would find the net to tie it up 1-1 with just under two minutes left to play after going with the man-advantage on an empty net.
But, ultimately, it was the Americans who proved victorious, outshooting Sweden 40-29.
